A brief history lesson …
Going through old photos recently, I came across a few that ignited some wonderful memories. I’m curious if any of you can identify the historic, old theater that these two actors, as well as hundreds more, spent their weekends, for no pay, to bring classic entertainment and comedy to the San José locals (hint) for many, many years.
A typical weekend show included a classic 3-act comedy, skits of vaudeville and timeless oleos. Fresh, free popcorn never ran out and beer sold by the pitcher. By the time the curtain was pulled open, the year was already back to 1877 (luckily, without all the six-shooters). Three complete shows hit the stage each weekend, year after year after year. It was always the weekend to look forward to.
But, all great things do end. During one very sad and turbulent year, someone decided that the 100-year-old historic landmark was hindering progress, and cost too much to maintain. In the end, the condos, or a bypass, or a new rest area, or whatever it was that challenged that rare and unique piece of California history … won.
Down came a long history of laughter, to the silence of many tears. The huge, white building, with a voice all its own, had gone silent. Forever. No second chances.
When will those lobby-driven, smiling faces in political power realize that money is not the end all; but money can certainly pay for the end of anything in their way. Nothing personal, but I hope they have trouble sleeping at night.
Rest in piece, old friend. I so enjoyed visiting you, as well as getting to you, through the beautiful Alamaden Valley of San José (last hint … geez, I might as well just tell you
.
Got the answers?
- What was the name of that historic theater?
- Who are the two actors in the photo?
- Where are all the other alumni? I heard some joined the opry (nevermind).
the Opry House, Almaden Valley, San Jose, California

Actually, you were almost right. The Opry House still stands, but did so through the determination of many locals. It was slated to become rubble, and got very close.
It did lose some of its ‘charm’ by losing the original comedy troupe, since they were considered a bit raunchy. So, what’s the problem with raunchy? It was the cornerstone of the place. So now they have more of a family-oriented comedy troupe (wait, I’m yawning) and I haven’t been back since.

My guess is that it’s Starsky and Hutch.
