Safely and easily swap out your Mac’s icons to give your desktop a look uniquely its own … FREE, with LiteIcon.
If you are aware of the program CandyBar by Panic (for Mac OS X), you know that virtually all the Mac’s icons, even the system icons like the trash can, Finder, etc., can be swapped out to give your desktop a new personalized look. The new version of CandyBar for 10.5 was rewritten from the ground upm and now includes the previous standalone Pixadex built right in — Pixidex is like iPhoto for icons.

Most all the icons I’ve come across are free, yet the artists have put in a lot of time creating them. Up until LiteIcon was developed by Julien Ramseier of Switzerland, you needed to buy software to install free icons. LiteIcon changed all that starting with Tiger (10.4), and now has added a whole new version for Leopard (10.5).

Free Mac software — Force Folders to Expose Themselves
At the end of each of my posts for free icons is a link about how to fix a folder that’s apparently missing its contents — of course, nothing is actually missing, but the folder is being lazy. This is not an isolated problem, but one which seems to be effecting Mac OS X folders in general … the contents of folders are not always updated as quickly as they should be.
As a test, I downloaded the same folder six times, all within a few minutes. Once the folder appeared empty, and five times it showed some or most of the actual contents, but never all the contents. The quick fix I describe in my link is fairly easy, but there’s even an easier way.
It’s called “Nudge” — a free contextual menu by Rainer Brockerhoff, distributed with permission. Once installed, right-click (or option left-click) then drag to the “nudge” option on a folder, document, hard drive, etc., and it will simply be forced to update. I use it everyday. If you’ve ever saved a file to a folder, and then couldn’t find it in that folder, only to have it appear there later, you’ll begin to understand the usefulness of Nudge.
